Don’t accept the very first lawyer in the phone book. You should do the proper research to make sure you make the best decision. The lawyer I hired, who was recommended by my personal real estate broker when I bough my first house, got her license revoked for malpractice! Be cautious!

If you are not completely comfortable with your attorney, keep looking. The same applies to their fee schedule. Never sign a blank check for their retainer! Prior to hiring them, ask them for estimate so fees do not get too steep.

You should be careful about giving an attorney a large retainer. Make sure they’ll refund any money not used. Look into a number of different lawyers; you might find one that takes a small retainer to begin with.

Only hire a lawyer you can trust. This goes double if you are looking for a lawyer to help with your business. Lawyers in these areas typically request for you to sign blank checks and retainer fees. This requires a very high level of trust and faith in the lawyer you have chosen. Try to keep yourself protected as much as possible.

Before you agree to hire a lawyer, sign an agreement with him or her regarding fees. This will keep you on the same page about the costs, and let you worry about the case. This will also give you plenty of time to put some money aside.
